An office reception area is an important part of a business. Before someone even gets to the receptionist, he or she will walk through the office reception area first. If you are in charge of decorating that area, it is important to do so in a way that appeals to the majority of the people that will walk through the front door. A few simple changes can help you turn the area from uninviting to appealing.

Put out some plants. Greenery is a simple and inexpensive way to brighten up any room. The best place to keep small plants is on a side table where they can be out of the way and will not get knocked over. If you have a large floor plant, you can tuck it in the corner, out of the way.
Hang a painting or photograph on the wall. It does not matter what type of business you have, you can always find a painting or photograph that matches it and reflects your style. It should be something that is eye-catching and has a sophisticated feel to it. For example, if you have a motorcycle shop, hang a large close-up photo of a beautiful motorcycle. Even if you cannot afford to spend a lot of money, you can check online auction sites or commission a local painter to paint it for you.
Use books as décor. Almost every office reception area has magazines, but you may also want to incorporate some interesting coffee-table books. Consider travel books of favorite places you have been or would like to go to someday. It can give your clients something interesting to browse through while they are waiting.
Hang a TV on the wall. While some businesses choose to put a TV on a stand, it leaves open the opportunity for it to get dirty or damaged. It can also take up quite a bit of space. Opt for hanging a flat-screen TV on a wall across from where the clients will sit.
Choose a neutral paint for the walls. While it may seem boring, you can always pump up the style with other items in the room. Neutral colors can complement anything. Paint is also easy to clean.
Select chairs for the office reception area that are easily washable. If someone makes a mess, it is much easier to wash it off than to have to throw out the entire chair. There should be enough chairs to accommodate your clients at any given time, but not so many that there is an excess. For example, if you see three clients in an hour, have only five chairs in the room.
Do not overwhelm the office with large pieces of furniture. It can look cluttered and can make the area appear uninviting.
