Learn how to start a post card business in these simple steps! This business is perfect for someone who takes good pictures, knows how to get those images to print, and can enjoy doing it. A great business is run by someone who loves what they are doing. Most post cards feature landscapes and landmarks. The simple reason for this is that when someone sees that landscape or landmark they can immediately associate it with a certain area. Some even feature a person or people that represents that certain area: city, state, region, or country.

Items you will need

  • Photographs
  • Digital Camera
  • Internet Connection
  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Ability to Travel
Step 1

Take pictures. The best way to start your post card business is by taking your camera out for a day in your city. Take photos of all of the landmarks and landscapes. Bring them all home and load them onto your computer. Delete those that did not come out well. Keep the ones that did. The more pictures you have the better for the start of your post card business.

Step 2

Edit photos. You will need to open each photo in your photo editing software to add your copyright. You can also add the location on the photo if you would like. There are some software programs out there made specifically for printing (and even creating) post cards. This might be an investment to look into for starting your own post card business.

Step 3

Create a template for the back of the post cards. This is pretty standard, but you can create your own template and have it set up how you want. It is important to create at least one good template that you can use and revise throughout your post card business.

Step 4

Print the post cards. You will need to tell your printer to print one image first and the second image when you return the paper. Your printer will print out however many you specify and you will then have to put the cards back in so that the printer will print the second image on the opposite side. It would be best to read online or in your printer's manual about how to print on both sides so you won't have to waste any paper or ink trying. It would be best to start your post card business without too much expense. Of course, if you prefer, you can take your images to a commercial printer to have them printed.

Step 5

Sell the post cards. You may want to hold off on printing until you sell that particular post card. Many online book publishers are using a print on demand technology that saves them a lot of money in the long run. You simply print out the post cards when they are sold and them mail them to your customers. If you don't want to do that or have an expo to go to you will need to print them out ahead of time.

Step 6

Promote the business. Now that you know how to start your own post card business you will need to promote your business via a website and other promotional methods. The best part about starting your own post card business is that you have a very effective promotional tool already - post cards! Use them to your advantage.

Warnings

  • Although your initial expenses will be low, you must still take caution in what you invest in due to many scams out there.
