Many people make the decision to go on a mission trip locally or to another part of the world. Missionary trips are costly and often require donations from individuals and businesses. When a person chooses to go on a trip of this kind, it is a common practice to write a letter asking for donations to help cover the costs of the trip. There are numerous costs involved in mission trips including airfare, lodging, food and supplies. Without the generous help from others, many people would never be able to go on a mission trip.
Address the letter. A person who wants to go on a mission trip often types a general letter and distributes it to friends, family and acquaintances. The letter should state "Dear" followed by a blank line, which allows you to personally fill in each person's name. Otherwise, address the letter "Dear Friends and Family."
Explain your objective. Describe the type of trip you are planning. Many times, a mission trip is planned as a group activity through a church or organization. Explain to your friends and family what organization is sponsoring the trip, where you will be going, the length of time and the date of the trip.
Describe the activities you will do there. Include details of what will occur when you arrive. Explain where you will stay, the type of work you will do and the ways you will help the people in that community.
Explain the goals you hope to achieve from the trip. These are things such as fixing a school roof, building indoor bathrooms, teaching children about God, baptizing people and leading people to God.
Let the recipients of the letter know how excited you are to perform this activity. If you feel that God has led you to do this, tell your readers that.
Ask for financial support. Include the amount the trip will cost and ask the recipients to pray about making the decision to support you in this endeavor. Ask them to consider donating any amount of money or supplies, and ask them also for their prayer support. Let them know that you will appreciate any donation given and that all gifts will make a difference. Include details regarding where to send payments and to whom checks must be addressed. State if the contributions are tax deductible and include any additional details regarding contributions.
Sign the letter. Thank the recipients for considering supporting you in this endeavor, and sign the letter something like "In His Service" followed by your name.
