How to Obtain a Business License in San Antonio, Texas

by Jesse Lanclos; Updated September 26, 2017

As of 2010, San Antonio does not require a license to do business. If you intend to open a business in San Antonio, however, you need a permit from the Department of Development Services. In some cases, you may need to submit to an inspection of your business location.

Step 1

Contact the Internal Revenue Service and request an Employer Identification Number if your business plans to operate with employees or as a partnership or corporation. Call 1-800-829-4933 or apply online.

Step 2

Fill out the tax registration form online to get a Texas sales tax permit.

Step 3

Call the San Antonio Development Services Department at 210-207-1111 to request an application for a business permit. Ask for an appointment for an initial site inspection, if this has never been completed for your business location.

Step 4

Complete the application for your business permit. Submit the application by mail or in person to:

San Antonio Development Services Department 1901 S. Alamo St. San Antonio TX 78204
