How to Do an Ad on the Computer

Whether you are creating an ad digitally to be published in a newspaper or in another print publication, or you are creating one for web consumption, you can easily do it all yourself from the comforts of your personal or business computer. Online classified ads have gained in popularity over the years, and many newspapers and magazines have different ad divisions for their online version than they do for their print editions. You can place an online or print ad for virtually anything that you can think of.

Step 1

Determine the best place for your advertisement to optimize the number of views it gets and the number of potential buyers it reaches. If you are creating an ad for a job opening, it may have more success as an Internet ad, as people have started to turn their job searches digital. Conversely, if you are looking to increase patronage at your local auto repair shop, then a print ad in a local paper may be more effective.

Step 2

Create the ad using text, graphics, or a combination of both. If you have a graphic design program like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop Pro, you can design it yourself. If you are creating an image ad, make sure to first check if there are set pixel dimensions you must apply to your ad if you intend to submit to a website. Make a few versions in varying dimensions if you plan to advertise on multiple sites. For a text ad, write your thoughts in a word processor and edit thoroughly before you submit your ad anywhere. Print ads charge by the word, so you will want to be concise. Easily add your logo if you are using a graphic design program, and if you are using a word processor, you can easily drag in your logo to add in as clip art. Contact the print publication to submit your ad either online or by mail.

Step 3

Post a free, targeted ad or “posting” on Craigslist. You can advertise virtually anything in any one of their categories using a primarily text-based ad. It works like a forum or message board, and it is a very laid-back and informal community. Optionally add images and links to your posting.

Step 4

Use Google Ad Manager or AdWords to optimize your advertisement’s web presence. Each program allows your ad to reach and potentially attract more customers by displaying it on relevant sites around the web that subscribe to the popular revenue sharing program Google AdSense.
