The Types of Post Office Boxes

PO boxes are a safe and secure way to house your mail.

The United States Postal Service, USPS, offers several services outside of just delivering your mail. One of those is the ability to have your own post office box, or PO box. Some uses for PO boxes include mail delivery for rural areas, concealing your physical address or even receiving mail for your small business. Whatever your circumstance, the USPS has several types to choose from.

Small Boxes

The USPS offers two box types that they consider small to fit your needs. The size for the smallest box is 3 inches by 5.5 inches. This would be appropriate if you only need your PO Box to hold normal letters. For a slight step larger, they also offer the 5-by-5.5-inch size. This would be convenient if you expect larger letters or more mail.

Medium Boxes

The USPS only has one box type that they consider medium. This is the 11-by-5.5-inch size. If you are looking for an average-sized box then this may be your option. This is also appropriate if you expect small packages to be delivered often.

Large Boxes

If you receive a lot of mail or very large packages, then the USPS has options that should accommodate you. They offer two large box types, the 11-by-11-inch PO box and the 22.5-by-12-inch box. The 11-by-11-inch box is larger than the size of a standard piece of paper, which makes receiving large envelopes and mailers convenient because you don't have to worry about them being bent in your box upon delivery. The largest size is appropriate if you receive packages of large items on a regular basis.

Ways to Pay

The USPS offers several ways to pay for your box once you actually choose one. You can open a new PO box or renew an existing one using their PO Boxes Online system, visit an Automated Postal Center kiosk, mail your payment or even pay in person at your local post office. Box holders should be sure to renew their PO box on time to avoid any interruption in mail delivery.
