A company can continue to build its organization and gain ground on the competition if it creates a culture within itself that values improvement. If you can find ways to encourage continuous improvement within your employees, you will be helping yourself succeed as a manager. Employees who become more efficient or learn new skills help to improve the effectiveness of the overall team. Make it an active goal to encourage improvement in your employees at all times, and you may also see continuous improvement in your company.

Step 1.

Offer educational benefits. Many companies offer their employees some form of an educational benefits program. Offer benefits that employees can apply toward outside training or education that will help them in their work for your organization. The government allows you to pay for a considerable amount of an employee's education. That money becomes a tax free profit for the employee. This provides ample encouragement for employees to take advantage of the option and further their education.

Step 2.

Conduct a regular series of in-house workshops and training seminars. If you provide educational resources to employees in the form of experts conducting workshops or training, they can take advantage of those resources to make themselves excel. You can also make such training mandatory. Employees who are better educated, whether through self- or company-directed education, are more likely to be useful when implementing continuous improvement strategy. Increased education gives a person a more well rounded viewpoint and improves reasoning skills, both of which are valuable assets for continuous improvement.

Step 3.

Provide incentives for employees who innovate. Create a culture in your business where creative thinking and innovation is rewarded rather than frowned upon. This will help to constantly generate new ways that employees can function better individually and as teams, as well as improving the way the company operates as a whole.

Step 4.

Look for problems that need to be solved within the organization. There is no such thing as a perfect company. A company that thinks it has nothing to improve on will certainly improve nothing. If you proactively look for areas where your company could improve, it will give you targets to focus the energies of your employees on.

Step 5.

Check the success of any changes that you've made. This could include training, education or creative solutions to problems that are brought about by your employees. If the changes are successful, then you should implement them on a wide scale. If they are not, you should try to re-evaluate the problem and take a different approach.


If you want to implement a more structured system for continuous improvement into your business, you should implement one of the continuous improvement methodologies with a documented track record. Several of these exist, but well known ones like Six Sigma and Lean have achieved positive results for many companies.
