How to Make a Small Catalog to Sell My Product

by Buffy Naillon; Updated September 26, 2017

Many enterprising entrepreneurs save money in their businesses initially by designing their marketing materials themselves. If you find yourself in this situation, many programs exist to help you create business cards, flyers, and even product catalogs. Additionally, some of these programs offer design templates for items like product catalogs, which take the pressure off of you to create well-designed marketing materials. This leaves you with more free time in which to hand out your catalog and market your product.

Items you will need

  • Computer
  • Word processing program
  • Digital camera and accessories
  • Microsoft Publisher
  • Printer
  • Printer paper
Step 1

Make a work project folder on your computer where you can store all the information that you’ll put into your product catalog.

Step 2

Write your catalog product descriptions in a word processing program.

Step 3

Save your product descriptions in your file folder.

Step 4

Take photos of your product. You want them to be clear and crisp. You might also consider photographing them on a white or light colored background so that they stand out—unless your product happens to be colored a light color. Then you want to do the reverse. Additionally, if you take your photos with a digital camera, you’ll be able to upload them immediately.

Step 5

Upload your product photos onto your computer and save them in your project folder.

Step 6

Resize your photos if necessary; many digital cameras produce very large photos. While you can use an advanced program like Adobe Photoshop, programs like Microsoft Paint. (See Resources)

Step 7

Open up your Microsoft Publisher software. This program offers you catalog templates than run on the small side.

Step 8

Select the catalog option on the left-hand side of the work area.

Step 9

Look through the catalog template menu to find the one that best represents you and your product and click on it.

Step 10

Go through each of the options. These include page content as well as font and color options. If your company already has a design motif, select the options that best fit it.

Step 11

Import your catalog pictures from your file folder. To do this, go to “Insert”, then “Picture”, and then finally “File”. You’ll choose your catalog file folder.

Step 12

Adjust your photos if they require it. Although you’ve already sized them, sometimes you may notice that they still don’t quite fit your needs in their current size. Publisher allows you to resize photos by clicking on the photo, grabbing the little “knobs” at the corners of the picture, and then dragging your mouse in an inward or outward direction until your photos become the correct size.

Step 13

Insert your product description texts. The easiest way to do this in a Publisher template is to double-click on the dummy text provided for you in the template until it’s highlighted. Then copy and paste your text from your word processing document directly into the highlighted space.

Step 14

Save your catalog in PDF (portable document file) format. (See Resources)

Step 15

Put your catalog paper in the printer and print it out.

Step 16

Bind your catalog using staples or binding glue.
