An Acknowledgement of Receipt is a legal form which proves someone you are doing business with has received a payment or a package at a certain date and time. These are often simple documents which have certain important pieces of information on them and require a signature or reply, to confirm the transaction described in the form has occurred and been completed.

Letter Acknowledgement

A basic legal document can be put together as an acknowledgement of receipt form, which states basic facts about the transaction and requires a signature from the receiving party. This form states who the transaction is between, for how much or what items are being transacted, a date and a signature from each party involved in the transaction. Two copies should be brought to the transaction, so that each party can have their own copy of the acknowledgement of receipt form, so they can both have proof the transaction occurred and was properly completed.

Email Acknowledgement

Email acknowledgement of receipt forms can also work. These contain the same information as the physical paper copy of an acknowledgement of receipt form, with a description of the transaction, how much or what is being exchanged for what particular services, the date (which will also be recorded up to the minute by the email system) and the parties involved. As emails cannot be signed on the computer itself, legal representatives should each be cc'd on the email acknowledgement and responses should be provided from each party, agreeing to the receipt of the goods or money. This email paper trail will hold up in court, if it needs to.

Third Party Acknowledgement

A third party can also deliver the money or goods to the two parties doing a transaction, being an outside messenger between the two groups and having each one sign upon delivery of the goods or money being transacted. These third parties are often represented by messengers or delivery services like UPS, FedEx or DHL and already have legal forms which allow them to support that the transaction was made if there is ever a discrepancy and the issue goes to court. This has become a preferable way to do transactions, as a third party delivery service has no self interest in the transaction other then to keep both parties happy.
