Starting a new business in the state of West Virginia requires that the business apply for various types of licenses to help them become legal entities in the state. Applying for a new license involves researching the types of licenses that your business will need and contacting the various government agencies at state and federal levels. Keeping up with all the licenses you will need may seem difficult, however it is a necessary part of running a business.

Step 1

Register your West Virginia-based business with the Internal Revenue Service. This can be done by filling out the form SS-4, or by entering your business information online at the IRS website. This is a necessary step to getting licensed in West Virginia because registering with the IRS provides you with an employer tax number that you will use when you fill out licensing forms.

Step 2

Register your business with the West Virginia secretary of state via the website or at the secretary of state office. The business must be registered in order to receive any business licenses that you may need. The form will be called "Application for a Trade Name." You must have two copies of the form filled out, and both copies need to be signed by an authorized officer. As of 2010, the fee for filing out the Application for a Trade Name is $25.

Step 3

Contact the West Virginia state tax department. All businesses in West Virginia need to be registered with the tax department to be considered legitimate businesses. Register your new business using the form "BUS-APP Business Application Instruction and Form Booklet." This form is available to be filled out online or by requesting a hard copy from the state department. As of 2010, a $30 fee is required with the paperwork. Paying taxes on the state level prevents the state of West Virginia from having to charge your business for late taxes.
