In today’s computer-based world, many businesses look to use the Internet to promote and sell their services. Yahoo! offers the Yahoo! store hosting platform as a way for companies to establish an e-commerce presence. While this service is not free, it does allow customers to purchase online through the Yahoo! shopping cart and checkout function. The features of a Yahoo! store include professional designs, customer service and a product catalog that allows for an inventory of up to 50,000 items.

Open the Yahoo! Small Business website in a browser.

Move to the top of the screen and select “Ecommerce” from the menu.

Click on the “Sign Up” button on the right side of the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up an account. You will need to pay the fees and select a domain name.

Set up the storefront. The easiest way to do this is with the Yahoo! design wizard. You also can use an off-site design program such as Dreamweaver or hire a professional design service. Click on the “Design Wizard” link to open the design feature.

Select a design option for the navigation menu on the storefront, create your own design or select a template.

Choose a top or side menu system by selecting the appropriate pictures on the right side of the wizard when creating your own design.

Choose the color layout for the store. The wizard opens a group of templates with different color schemes. Click on the option that best suits the business. For example, one choice uses a white background with green and maroon colors. The color posted on the upper left corner represents page background; the upper right is masthead or banner colors. The lower left provides the options for text color and lower right is background for individual sections.

Pick a pre-designed template as an alternative to selecting your own design. The wizard offers a variety of pre-made stores. Click on the template to see a preview of the design.

Upload a logo for your store once the layout is set. The option will appear automatically after you select a design. Press the “Browse” button to locate the file on your hard drive. Press “Upload” to add the logo to your pages.

Move to the text boxes to add content to the pages. Key pages such as the “Home” page will display a text box. Click on the box and type in the text you want to see on that page.

Use the wizard to upload products to the storefront. Follow the on-screen instructions to add images, pricing and descriptions of inventory.

Click the “Save” button once the design is complete.

  • To view a demo of the design wizard, click "View Demo" on the Yahoo! Small Business website.
