The Colossal Biosciences funding valuation demands an explanation. The company has raised more than $600 million to date, per New Hampshire Public Radio, has no disclosed commercial revenue, and its headline goals reviving the woolly mammoth, dire wolf, and South Island giant moa remain years or decades from realization by any independent scientific estimate. The most significant technical milestone announced in recent months is a working artificial egg membrane, demonstrated on chickens.

What Colossal has actually delivered
The centerpiece of Colossal's current investor case is the artificial egg it announced two months ago. The company reported that 26 chickens were hatched using a transparent, silicone-based membrane lattice designed to incubate embryos outside a biological host, and said the system can be manufactured at scale and in any size, according to RNZ.
The membrane's key technical achievement, independent scientists told RNZ, was solving a gas-exchange problem that had blocked artificial incubation research for decades, enabling oxygen to diffuse through the membrane in a way that sustains embryo development. That's a legitimate scientific contribution. The moa project also carries notable outside backing: filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson is a financial backer, and the project runs in partnership with Ngāi Tahu Research Centre and Canterbury Museum, institutional affiliations that add credibility beyond the lab, per RNZ.
The artificial egg is not, however, close to a moa. The membrane still requires a live embryo and yolk to be added; it is a container, not a complete incubation system. A moa egg is roughly 80 times larger than a chicken egg, meaning the yolk volume needed to develop a full-sized moa chick has no biological analog among living species, per RNZ. Independent scientists quoted by RNZ said moa de-extinction is not imminent, and that producing even a genetically engineered emu proxy would require genome engineering techniques still in development, with unclear ecological justification.
