How to Find My USDOT Number

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The FMCSA issues USDOT numbers to businesses that haul cargo across state lines or transport passengers in commercial vehicles. Commonly used to monitor and collect safety data about the company, the USDOT number also services to identify an individual business. Locate your USDOT number by using the online USDOT search tool.

Step 1

Go to the USDOT licensing and insurance carrier search tool.

Step 2

Enter the legal name of your business or the "doing business as" name of your business.

Step 3

Select your business's state of registration from the drop-down menu.

Step 4

Click the "Search" button.

Step 5

Scroll-down and find your business. Note your USDOT number listed to the left of your business's name.

  • Alternatively, you can call the U.S. Department of Transportation at 800-832-5660 and ask the customer service representative for assistance in finding your USDOT number.
