Your goal is to maximize the return on investment per square foot when determining the layout of your store. Keep this in mind when allocating how much space is to be used for the various functions of the store. Determining the layout is the first step to the interior design of a retail store.

Showroom

The largest area of a retail store is devoted to the showroom and merchandising area. Create a layout that is easy for customers to navigate. Wide aisle ways and creative merchandising displays can encourage customer purchases. Designate an area specifically designed for your customers to complete their purchases.

Storage Room

Ample storage is important to a retail establishment. The storage room should provide well-organized shelf and floor space to stock extra merchandise. The size of your storage room is determined by the amount of retail merchandise you carry and the turnover rate of your inventory. You do not need a large storage area if your inventory turnover rate is low.

Receiving Area

Designate a receiving area to receive shipments of new merchandise. Depending on the type of retail store and size of shipments, a loading dock may be necessary. In order to maintain inventory control, all new merchandise needs to enter the store through a central location.

Offices

Office space needs to be located in a private area. Confidential business documents and records are typically stored in these offices. Select a quiet area free from distractions for the offices.
