The mention of a training class or seminar date can strike panic in the minds of the even the coolest of business professionals. When training is necessary to maintain performance objectives and standards, making training fun can enhance the overall experience and knowledge of those tasked to attend the event. Take the time to create dynamic training sessions that people will actually remember.
Break the ice. Allow the trainees to introduce themselves to help set the appropriate atmosphere. Training is more fun when the environment isn’t too rigid. Don’t forget to introduce yourself to the group. Let them know that the training class will be informative but fun. This will certainly catch their attention and make them want to enjoy themselves.
Inject humor into your approach. Even if the subject is boring to some attendees, the instructor doesn’t have to be. Spice up your class by adding a few jokes or funny experiences to your lesson plan. It may even be advantageous to joke about how boring you think the material is, making the trainees more receptive to your teaching and maybe even your jokes.
Plan group exercises. Listening to prepared materials from the confines of a desk often takes its toll on trainees. Allow the group to interact with each other as you take them through the training session. Remember that everyone has different learning styles and rates. Use fun games and projects to facilitate learning and teaching within the group. For example, divide the group into teams and ask them to create a crossword puzzle or Jeopardy questions using 10 characteristics of your subject. These types of exercises reinforce learning objectives.
Invite guest speakers. A guest speaker is often useful at providing practical knowledge as well as breaking up the monotony of a lecture. People often absorb more information if it’s heard from several different sources. Use the guest speaker to demonstrate principles you’ve covered during class. For example, ask a paramedic to demonstrate proper CPR techniques at your first aid seminar. Seeing the training material being put into action may bring new life into the training.
Provide adequate breaks. Even the most enjoyable training sessions can be ruined by lack of sufficient rest periods. The training material should be arranged and divided in a logical order to allow for breaks. Training information is best received by a well-rested mind. Factor in breaks when you plan the training session and adjust for circumstances as they arise.
Ask the trainees to complete performance critiques at the end of the training session. Use their input as a guide to better your approach.
