What are the Best Ways to Work From Home?

by Bonnie Conrad - Updated September 26, 2017
Working from home gives you freedom.

Working from home is a dream come true for many workers. Eliminating the morning and evening commutes and working from the comfort of your own home certainly has a lot of appeal. Changes in technology and advances in telecommunications have made it possible to do many jobs from virtually anywhere. If you have the right skills and a strong work ethic, you might be able to earn a good living without ever leaving your home.

Your Current Employer

If your current job is conducive to working remotely, you might be able to convince your boss to let you telecommute. Jobs like computer programming, customer service and website support can often be done just as effectively from home, and many employers are expanding work-at-home opportunities for their employees. If you want to work at home, schedule a meeting with your boss to discuss the possibility. Offer to ease into the work-at-home schedule by working from home one or two days a week to test things out. As your boss become more comfortable, you can expand your work-at-home days and begin to transition to full-time work-at-home status.

Customer Service

Many companies, including such household names as Jet Blue, allow their customer service representatives to work from home. If you have strong customer service skills, seeking out a work-at-home job in customer service can be a very smart move. If you do plan to work from home in customer service, you need to have a high speed connection to the Internet, and possibly a second phone line as well. Some companies provide you with everything you need to work from home, while others require that you supply the equipment and service you need to connect to the Internet and take customer phone calls.

Virtual Assistant

If you have a background in administrative and secretarial work, you might be able to earn money as a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant does the same type of work as an administrative assistant in an office setting. The main difference is that a virtual assistant can work from anywhere. You might find yourself working for clients in Asia, Europe and all around the globe, doing everything from setting appointments to answering phone calls and composing letters and emails.

Freelance Opportunities

If you prefer the freedom of freelance work to a traditional job, you can find many opportunities online. These freelance jobs allow you to work from home, and to work on your own schedule. You can choose the assignments that interest you, then work at your own pace to complete those assignments. Freelance work allows you to work as much or as little as you want, and to make as much money as you want. You can start by exploring the various freelance job sites on the Internet and reviewing the projects listed there. Take note of any projects that match your skills and provide the kind of compensation you need. Then sign up for the freelance job board to bid on those jobs and correspond with the buyers.
