Hiring a massage therapist can be done two ways. You can either hire someone as an independent contractor or as an employee. Your contract will depend upon which method you choose. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and so it is important that you choose the best method for you based on the needs of your business.

Hiring a Massage Therapist with a Business Contract

Step 1.

Interview the prospective candidate to see if they are the right match for your organization or company. Some of the things you might like to look for are: reliability and punctuality, are they honest, responsible, personable, committed and do they enjoy what they do. You will also need to have a sample massage given to you to know what they do in a massage.

Step 2.

Study up on both the advantages and disadvantages of hiring the massage therapist as an employee versus an independent contractor depending upon your business. Some of the advantages of hiring them as an employee are that the owner sets the standard of dress, has control over the hours worked and conduct. The drawbacks are that the owner has to handle all payroll taxes and liability insurance for your staff. The advantages of hiring an independent contractor are: the massage therapist is responsible for the hours they choose to work, what they wear, filing taxes and liability insurance. The owner is only responsible for filing a 1099 at the end of the year. The disadvantage is that legally they set their own hours and are not available to take appointments on off days. There is no dress code for an independent contractor, and the owner cannot enforce one.

Step 3.

Go online and download a free contract to suit your needs; both independent and employee are available or hire an attorney to draft the type of contract you want. You can also download attorney written contracts as well. There are many resources online now to obtain legal documents for free, or you can buy a book from Nolo Press and use their sample contracts.

It is really important to do the research on both ways to hire a massage therapist. The more informed you are, the better decision you will be able to make.
