The Department of Veteran Affairs makes it easy for veterans to obtain a Veteran Identification Card (VIC). Because the VIC does not include your Social Security Number, date of birth or other confidential information, it is deliverable by mail. Your photo is printed on the face of the card to ensure proper use and deter a thief from improperly using your card. Request your VIC by mail, on line or in person.

Apply in Person

Request a Veteran Identification Card (VIC) in person at your local Department of Veterans Affair (VA) office.

Have your picture taken to appear on the front of your VIC.

Update your address, if necessary, with a staff person. Complete VA Form 10-10EZR, Health Benefits Renewal.

Check the information printed on your VIC for accuracy. For example, special eligibility indicators such as “Service Connected,” “Purple Heart,” and “Former POW” may be printed on your card.

Apply by Mail or Internet

Apply for enrollment online or by mail. Upon approval, your ID card will be sent. Wait seven to 10 days for your VIC to arrive by mail.

Complete VA Form 10-10EZR, Health Benefits Renewal to update your address. Return by mail or for faster processing return the form in person at a local VA facility.

Return to the facility where you made your original request. If the U.S. Postal Service cannot deliver the card for some reason, you must pick it up in person.

Tip

Contact the VA by phone at 877-222-8387 to locate a VA office near you or to check on your VIC.
