How to Obtain a Mobile Home Sales License
Selling mobile homes can be a profitable and rewarding way to earn a living if you enjoy working in this industry. According the U.S. Census Bureau, the average sales price for a manufactured home, including mobile homes, was $62,400 dollars in June 2010. Depending on your commission structure as a mobile home dealer, this could translate into a substantial amount of money for just one sale. In order to sell mobile homes in the U.S., you need to obtain a vehicle dealer license. The requirements for obtaining a dealer license vary according to what state you are operating your dealership in.
Contact the vehicle dealer licensing agency in your area to find out what the licensing requirements are. Oftentimes, this is the Department of Motor Vehicles or another state-run agency. If you’re not sure which agency administers the licensing process, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles. They can lead you to the proper agency.
Attain the required vehicle surety bond from a vehicle insurance agency. Depending on what state you live in, surety bond requirements typically range in value from $10,000 to $100,000 dollars. The licensing department will inform you of the correct amount needed.
Secure liability insurance on your mobile home inventory. The same insurance agency that issued your surety bond should be able to get you set up with liability insurance.
Complete any required tasks you need to acquire your vehicle dealer license. Requirements vary by state. This may include taking a dealer training class, having a criminal background check and submitting fingerprints, and selecting a dealership location.
Obtain a vehicle dealer license application from the licensing department. Fill it out as thoroughly as possible. You will need to provide information about your mobile home dealership such as the location, surety bond and liability policy information, whether you’re a sole proprietor corporation or LLC, and expected gross revenue.
Submit your application along with the proper filing fee and any other required documents and forms. The agency will notify you when your mobile home dealer license has been approved.
