History

Business writing has been around as long as business and writing. Thousands of years ago business people kept track of transactions and inventory through writing. As more international business became usual, business letters became a huge aspect of the business world. After the invention of the phone business writing became less common, however, when email became popular for business use, business writing again became a very necessary part of the business world.

Function

The purpose of business writing is to communicate to other business people through the means of writing. The different types of business writing will communicate information differently to the recipient. For example, emailing someone information is one of the least formal methods of business writing. If a letter is sent in the mail, then the information included is generally considered to have more formality and legality. A lot of companies do much of their advertising in business writing format.

Features

There are several main categories of business writing. First there is email. This is the least formal communication method, and is generally used when people are not able to physically get up and talk to someone, or to communicate without the use of a phone. Research and technical writing is used in the business world to create presentations and document new ideas for companies. The business letter is a more formal way of communicating information to a colleague or superior. The business letter is often used when applying for a job. Memos are also often used to send important information to groups of people.

Significance

Business writing is very important because it is one of the number one ways that people are viewed professionally. If someone has a sloppy writing style, then he will be seen as a sloppy person. People who can communicate clearly through writing in the business world will have a higher chance of receiving promotions and job offers. It is also important that business writing be done in a clear and concise manner so that the recipients of the writing can actually understand the point of the writing.

Geography

Business writing is important in almost every country. English is one of the most well-known languages in the world, so many business communications between countries are done in English. If someone has a hard time communicating with other English speakers, then it will be a lot harder for them to communicate with people from other countries. It is very rare that a business anywhere does not operate with a lot of business writing.
