American Revolutionary War Scholarships

Two Revolutionary War organizations sponsor scholarships for students.

Organizations associated with the American Revolutionary War offer scholarships on local, state and national levels to high school seniors or students already enrolled in college. These organizations include the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution. Applicants do not need to be descended from those who fought in the War of Independence, nor do they need to be members of the organizations.

Daughters of the American Revolution

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, more commonly referred to as DAR, offers numerous scholarships on the national level. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who plan to attend college in the United States. Most scholarships the national DAR awards give preference to students majoring in history, government, education and nursing. An example of the scholarships awarded is the Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship. This scholarship goes to a high school senior who will major in American history and American government. The renewable scholarship is for $2,000 a year.

Sons of the American Revolution

The national Sons of the American Revolution sponsors the Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship. This scholarship is open to active Eagle Scouts who have not reached their 19th birthday. Applicants must write a 500-word essay on a patriotic theme and submit a four-generation family tree. The top award is $8,000, with runners-up receiving $4,000 and $2,000, respectively. Applicants start by entering at the chapter level, then advance to the state and finally the national level.

Chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarships

State and local chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution also sponsor scholarships. One state chapter that does this is the Texas Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. The chapter sponsors scholarships at 11 colleges in Texas; most of the scholarships are restricted to specific majors, such as teacher certification in learning disabilities at Texas State University. The chapter says applicants should check with the college they want to attend since colleges administer the scholarships.

Chapters of Sons of the American Revolution

State and local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution may award scholarships to Eagle Scouts at one of the levels of the Arthur M. and Berdena King Scholarship, which is awarded on the national level. Tennessee is one state that awards a scholarship to the state winner, who advances to the national competition. The Scobey Rogers scholarship is for $500. Applicants can be in any grade, as long as they are not over the age of 19.
