How to Win in a Job Interview

Some interviewees walk into an employer’s office without knowing much about the position they're applying for; however, employers tend to ask questions that will ultimately reveal your skill level and knowledge of their company -- or lack thereof. Based on your answers, they’ll decide if you’re a good match for the position or not. Making a good impression in the interview and providing strong answers to commonly asked questions will help you stand out in the interviewer's mind, potentially resulting in a job offer.

Step 1

Spend time researching the company. Check out its website and learn about its history, the services it provides and its stated objectives. Having a solid knowledge about the company you're applying to will arm you with added confidence as you go into the interview, and demonstrating that you've done your homework is likely to impress the interviewer.

Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the job description of the position for which you're applying. Study the job description posted by the company, and also do an online search of the job title to familiarize yourself with other duties that may be associated with that position. This will help you determine whether the job is a good fit for you, and it will also aid you in asking informed questions when meeting with the interviewer.

Step 3

Practice your answers to possible interview questions out loud. Expect your interviewer to inquire about previous positions you've held and ask such questions as, "Why are you a good match for the position and our company?"; "Can you work under pressure?"; "Are you a team player?"; "What are your salary expectations?" Your previous research will come in handy as you answer these and other questions.

Step 4

Show up on time. Leave your house early to allow for any delays, such as traffic jams. Go online in advance and get driving directions to avoid getting lost. If possible, drive to the interview location a day or two beforehand to familiarize yourself with the route.

Step 5

Speak and dress professionally. Job interviews are not casual settings. Wear appropriate attire, such as a business suit, pantsuit, dress or slacks; a visual impression is the first you'll make, so make it a good one. Also, watch your speech. Be respectful -- do not speak in a familiar way, as you would with friends. Avoid using slang words, and speak clearly so the interviewer can understand you.
