How to Land That Job in the Interview

Dressing professionally is important in a job interview.

Job interviews are commonly held by employers as a chance to meet and talk with applicants during the hiring process. A job interview is beneficial to both the applicant and the employer, as it provides the opportunity for both parties to meet in person. As an applicant, the way you present yourself in a job interview often means the difference between getting the job or being declined for the position. Landing a job in the interview can be done by utilizing good communication skills and highlighting strengths that present you as the best candidate for the job.

Step 1

Prepare for the interview by researching as much as possible about the company and the position you are applying for. Know exactly what kind of policies the company is known for and what kind of work will be expected of you if hired. Cater your resume toward the knowledge gained in your research so that your resume will accurately reflect why you are the best candidate for the job.

Step 2

Dress professionally on the day of the interview. Make sure that not only are your clothes business appropriate, but that your hair and overall look also give off the impression of a working professional. If you are male, make sure your facial hair is groomed. If you are a female, make sure you are not wearing too much makeup or too many accessories. Wear perfume or cologne so that your smell is pleasing when making your first impression on the potential employer.

Step 3

Arrive several minutes early for the interview to show that you would be a punctual employee. Introduce yourself professionally when entering the interview. Shake hands with the interviewer and introduce yourself. Smile when introducing yourself and try to appear confident without coming across as insincere or arrogant. It is perfectly acceptable to engage in friendly small talk before the interview begins by asking how the potential employer is doing, but refrain from chatting too much as this can look unprofessional.

Step 4

Highlight your key strengths and skills in the interview and try to focus on how these skills would relate to the job you are applying for. For example, if you have excellent customer service skills and are applying for a job that deals with customers, highlight how these skills would benefit the company if you were hired. Give examples of how you have used these skills in past work environments. When speaking, do so in a calm, professional tone. Refrain from talking too much or too quickly.

Step 5

Answer any questions the interviewer asks honestly. Potential employers can usually tell when an applicant is lying about previous experiences or is exaggerating the truth. If you do not have much experience involving the position you are interviewing for, be honest and tell them you do not. However, you can make up for your lack of experience by discussing aspects of your personality that would make learning the job easy for you, such as your adaptability and openness to change and learning new things.

Step 6

Ask questions about anything you do not understand or about the position you are interviewing for. This will show your openness to learn and that you are sincerely interested in the company.

Step 7

Provide a solid list of professional references that can vouch for your work ethic, trustworthiness and punctuality. Refrain from listing friends and family. Instead, try to list former employers and coworkers.
