Before you start using that new fax machine you just setup in your home or office, you'll need to get a fax line installed so that your fax machine can send and receive faxes on a separate number from your telephone. Sharing a fax machine and a telephone on the same line can be frustrating when one device is tying up the line. Adding a separate line will enable you to use both devices simultaneously. A fax line is really just a second phone line connected to a fax machine instead of a phone. Anyone can get a second line or number from their local phone company.
Call your phone company. Tell the operator that you would like to get a fax line for your home or office and they will transfer you to the appropriate representative.
Schedule a convenient time for the phone company to send a technician to your home or office.
Choose an area in your home or office where you would like the extra line installed. When the technician arrives, show them where to install the jack. After they have finished installing the new line and jack, pay them the installation fee.
Test the line to make sure it is working by plugging a phone into it and listening for a dial tone.
Your phone company will charge you a fee for installing a second line.
