Magnetic signage for advertising is extremely effective, especially placed on the sides of vehicles and other metallic surfaces. Aluminum is obviously the exception, being non-magnetic. Fortunately, there are other non-permanent yet secure methods for attaching these signs to aluminum surfaces. Commonly used in the automotive industry, foam-based trim tape, used sparingly, is resistant to moisture and UV, creating a secure and removable mounting solution.

Things You'll Need

  • 3M or other automotive trim tape
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol pads
  • New plastic putty knife

Getting Attached

Turn the sign face down, with the back facing up. Clean the back of the sign with one or two alcohol pads, and let dry for a few seconds.

Cut four two-inch strips of trim tape using the scissors. Place the tape towards the corners of the sign, and press securely into position.

Remove the backing from the trim tape. Position the sign over the aluminum surface, ensuring proper level and alignment. Press into position. Keep away from moisture and UV for a few minutes while the adhesive sets up.

To remove the signage, heat the corners of the sign using a heat gun on low or hair dryer, making sure not to distort the sign. Peel up the corners using a clean plastic putty knife or your fingers, after the sign sufficiently cools.

    Warnings

    • Although it may at times be desirable, using trim tape on more than 75% of the sign may result in an essentiallypermanent installation.
