SAE Certification refers to a certificate of registration issued by the Performance Review Institute (PRI), an affiliate organization of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
History and Purpose
SAE is an international professional organization of engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries dedicated to continuing education and standards development. Its affiliate, “created in 1990 by SAE Inc., PRI is a not-for-profit organization. It exists to advance the interests of the mobility and related industries through development of performance standards and administration of quality assurance, accreditation, and certification programs as well as related activities for the benefit of industry, government, and the general public.”
Accreditations and Certifications
Located in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, one of PRI’s key programs and established in 1995, the PRI Registrar is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board to certify organizations to a variety of management systems according to SAE requirements. Being the foremost registrar for quality, aerospace, environmental, and safety registrations, it grants international third-party certifications for a variety of standards such as ISO 9001 Quality Standards, aerospace standards, environmental management systems among others.
SAE does not directly issue certifications. In order to obtain a PRI Certificate of Registration a rigorous and in-depth audit is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the SAE. The scope of the registration varies widely depending on the needs and nature of the client. In efforts to facilitate the process, a personal client manager is assigned to guide each client through the registration process that may or may not involve cross recognition of qualification results from other associations and organizations.
